At our clinic a variety of Chemical Peel solutions are available, each using a different chemical to stimulate exfoliation of the stratum corneum & epidermis.  The type & strength of the chemical peel treatment will vary according to the skin issues being addressed & the amount of downtime afforded by the individual. Most chemical peels must be performed in a series & followed up with a daily home cosmeceutical regimen to achieve the desired result.  A carefully prescribed peel protocol & a commitment to a maintenance programme will produce skin benefits that can last years.

Superficial Chemical Peels contain ‘acids’ (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta-Hydroxy Acids) or ‘enzymes’ (e.g. bromelain enzyme from pineapple, papain enzyme from papaya).  Lactic Acid, an AHA is the most popular superficial chemical peel due to its superior exfoliating and hydrating effects. Cosmetic peels are designed to restore a healthy & youthful glow to the skin with no downtime. They may be used to fade brown marks and pigmentation, soften superficial sun damage, reduce oiliness & acne, improve pore size & generally give the skin a revitalising boost by removing the superficial dead skin cells. Penetration of topical moisturisers & anti-ageing serums will also be enhanced.

Treatment with a Superficial Chemical Peel is straightforward.  There is a mild to moderate stinging sensation when the peel solution is applied to your face.  The peel is then carefully timed & promptly removed by rinsing with water or a neutraliser. Your skin will appear flushed & there may be some white patches. This appearance does settle after a couple of hours.

After your Superficial Chemical Peel your skin can feel very dry as the dead skin peels away.  Skin peeling appears as superficial skin flaking & may not be obvious.  In fact, many patients won’t notice it at all.  It is recommended to use a light moisturiser with no active ingredients for a few days until your skin returns to normal. Daily sunscreen is also essential. A Superficial Chemical Peel does not involve any downtime & you can often return to work immediately after the peel.  A course of cosmetic peels approximately 2 – 4 weeks apart are recommended to achieve maximum skin rejuvenation effects.

 

Medium-Depth Chemical Peels penetrate deeper into the epidermis to treat more significant skin abnormalities.  It is essential to prepare your skin prior to these peel treatments with a ‘depigmenting’ serum or cream to enhance your final result & prevent a condition called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

 

Jessner’s Solution is a medium-depth chemical peel that contains a mixture of Salicylic Acid (a Beta-Hydroxy acid), Lactic Acid (an Alpha-Hydroxy acid) and Resorcinol. Jessner’s Solution is designed to stimulate, firm and tighten the skin and encourage new collagen growth. It is ideal in the treatment of skin pigmentation, sun damage and fine wrinkles.

The Jessner’s Chemical Peel treatment involves a course of three peels over a treatment period of 12 weeks. Unlike the Superficial Chemical Peels, Jessner’s Solution is self-limiting & does not require neutralisation.  It is applied onto the skin in a number of layers.  The layers applied will depend on your skin response & the skin condition being treated.  During the treatment, you will experience a transient burning or stinging sensation which may be uncomfortable but generally not painful. Immediately after the peel your skin will appear red & taut. The superficial layer of your skin may peel in 48 hours. This peeling resolves in 2-3 days with skin returning to its normal appearance in one week. You must not use scrubs or abrasive products on the treated area during the repair/renewal period.  A soothing moisturiser may be applied as often as needed. It is also important to avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks after the peel & always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen.

 

TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Peel is a medium depth chemical peel that penetrates deeper into the skin resulting in a dramatic skin shedding and the stimulation of healthy new skin cells & a fresher youthful appearance.

TCA peels are designed for skin with more sun damage & fine wrinkling. Freckles & irregular pigmentation can also be treated effectively. Although this peel treatment is most commonly applied on the face, it is also effective on the neck, décolletage, hands & arms.

Treatment with the TCA peel solution can be moderately uncomfortable as it causes a transient burning or stinging sensation. The solution creates a chemical injury to the top layer of skin cells causing them to dehydrate & exfoliate over several days. When the exfoliation process is complete a new layer of healthy skin is exposed which is smoother and more even in colour. You will require a downtime of 5-7 days as the skin will appear sunburnt and there may be areas of fine scabbing.  It is important that you do not pick, scratch, pull or rub your skin during the exfoliation process as it may damage the underlying new skin & jeopardise your final result.

After your TCA peel you will be more sensitive to sunlight for at least 4 weeks.  During this time it is very important to protect the new skin with sunscreen, a hat & the avoidance of strong sunlight.

This advanced Medical Skin Needling treatment, promotes scarless healing & the deposition of normal woven collagen, similar to fractional laser treatment but without the side effects and downtime.  At Skin Evolution we utilise a sophisiticated microneedling device.  It allows us to seamlessly treat the skin without excessive trauma or ‘drag’.

A Medical Skin Needling treatment takes approximately 60 minutes. After the treatment, your skin may appear red & flushed, similar to mild sunburn, but this fades within hours. Some mild flaking may be noticeable during the first 48 hours. You may choose to have a single treatment, although we do recommend a course of 3 – 6 treatments at intervals of 4 – 6 weeks to achieve optimum results.
